Challengers Ending Explained

Challengers ends with the reveal that Tashi asked Patrick to lose the match on purpose, for Art’s sake. However, he does not; instead, he tells Art secretly on the court that he has slept with Tashi and Art wins the match on his own merits.

Back in their hotel room, in the present day, Art tells Tashi that he no longer wants to play tennis. He is exhausted and overworked, and he knows that he has achieved his peak of success. However, it is clear that he is concerned about the future of their marriage, and Tashi's interest in him is dependent on whether or not he is playing tennis, and how well he is competing. He tells her that he will still play in the US Open, the last championship he has yet to win, but he also tells her how much her opinion matters to him, and begs her for a reason to play the next day against Patrick in the Challenger match.

Tasha tells him that she will leave him if he loses, and in a confusing yet tender moment, they kiss and Patrick asks Tashi to hold him as he falls asleep.

Winner of the Final Match?

Throughout the movie, we have glimpses of the game as the advantage changes from Art to Patrick. Now it's Patrick's turn to serve. Tashi catches his eye from the other end of the court, and Patrick hesitates. He holds the serve as he tries to decide whether he wants to let Art win or take him down and win the match for himself. He doesn't do either. Years ago, he and Art joked about a code where Patrick would tell Art if he had slept with him by imitating Art's signature serve by tapping the ball into the center of his racket handle for “YES!” The referee tells Patrick he has to serve, and he hesitates again. He picks up the ball and slowly raises it to the handle. Without saying a word, Patrick tells Art he slept with him. Art was stunned. The crowd goes wild.

Challengers Synopsis

“Challengers” is a “romantic sports comedy” that follows a professional tennis player (played by Zendaya) and his former rivals (played by Billie Lourd and Petra Ljubicic) as they battle for the world’s most prestigious grand slam trophy and rekindle old rivalries off the court.

The three players knew each other since they were teenagers, and their rivalry — and the drama that ensues — is based on their past and present lives. At the center of the action is Tashi Duncan (played by newcomer Zendaya), a former tennis star turned coach who is a force of nature in both the game of love and the game of business.

She is married to a champion who is on a losing streak and has to compete against the washed-up player, who happens to be his ex-best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend.
