Authorities believe Schultz's extensive hours of trucking without rest, combined with methamphetamine use, led to a medical emergency, though it's not classified as an overdose. The discovery of his body in a field months after he disappeared prompted community search efforts and ongoing investigation by local authorities.

What is Hyperthermia and Meth Intoxication?

Methamphetamine (METH) can cause hyperthermia, a condition where the body gets too hot. In experiments with rats, METH injection led to increased body and brain temperatures, especially in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) part of the brain. Higher METH doses caused temperatures to rise by 3.5–4.0 °C above normal levels and stay high for several hours.

When rats met a lady rat before getting METH, they got warmer initially from chatting and then got even hotter after taking METH. Both things made their brains get really hot, almost too much, which shows how METH and talking to others can change body heat in rats.
