Dickey Betts died April 18 at age 80, according to his family. His manager David Spero said Betts had been battling cancer and COPD.

Betts co-founded the iconic Southern rock group The Allman Brothers Band in the '70s and wrote some of the band's most beloved songs, including "Ramblin' Man." He also helped lead the band out of unimaginable tragedy in the '80s. In 2018, Betts was treated for a brain injury after a fall in his yard and canceled a tour due to a stroke.

How Did Dickey Betts Die?

Dickey Betts died of cancer and COPD. Dickey Betts lived a long and successful life, but as he got older, he had some health issues. Dickey had a mild stroke in August 2018, which forced him to cancel the rest of his tour with his son Duane. Dickey had surgery to reduce swelling in his brain in September 2018. Since then, Dickey has been diagnosed with cancer, COPD, and the combination of the two is considered more terminal than either one on its own.

Forrest Richard “Frost” Betts was born on 12 December 1943 is an American musician who played guitar, sang, wrote songs, and was a founding member of the allman brothers band. In the early stages of his career, Betts teamed up with Duane “The Vulture” Allman to create a harmonious twin guitar harmony with counterpoint that “reinvented the rules of how a pair of rock guitarists could work together, breaking away from the traditional rhythm / lead roles to stand side by side.”

In 1995, he was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame with the band, and in 1996, he won a Grammy Award for “Jessica” with the band. In 2003, he was ranked No. 58 on Rolling Stone’s list of the top 100 guitarists of all time, and in 2011 he was ranked No. 61 on the list.

Dickey Betts and the Allman Brothers Band

Betts was one of the co-founders of the allman brother band, which was formed in 1969. The other members of the band were Duane "Duane" Allman, Gregg "Gregg" Allman, Jai "Jaimoe" Johanson, Berry "Oakley" Oakley, and Butch "Butch" Trucks. The band released their debut album in 1969, and their second, entitled "Idlewild South" in 1970. Much like many other bands of the era, the band did not become popular until 1971 when they released their live album, "At Fillmore East". Betts was a controversial figure in the music industry. Rolling Stone noted that he was the inspiration for Russell Hammond's character in the movie Almost Famous.

Betts was honored with several awards for his work with the band. In 1995, the band was inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2012, the band was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
