Is DJ Mister Cee Dead?

Disc jockey Mr. Cee has passed away at the age of 57. He was one of the most prominent figures in New York City's booming hip-hop scene in the 1990s and was one of the early champions of the rapper Notorious B. I.G. Before his passing, Mr. Cee had his own SiriusXM channel, SiriusXM channel “Set It Off Show,” playing throwbacks on the station’s sister SiriusXM channel, “94.7 The Block.” Mr. Cee and Big Daddy Kane worked together for many years, and Mr. Cee was credited with helping to launch the careers of many rap stars, including 50 Cent. There is no immediate word on the whereabouts of Mr. Cee’s survivors.

Following his death, the station played a record of its 2022 mix dedicated to the rapper on what would have been his 50th birthday. In an episode of the podcast Kitchen Talk, which was released in 2021, Mr Cee shared a photo of himself holding a 45 R.P.M. record from when he was 3 years old. “My dad gave me this before he passed away in 1993, which is when I joined Hot 97,” he said.

Calvin LeBrun was born on August 17, 1966 nicknamed "Mr. Cee" or "DJ Mister Cee") is an American rapper, DJ, record producer, broadcaster, and radio personality. He is best known for his work on New York’s RADIO 103,9.

He is credited with discovering both Big Daddy Kane and himself. He was a guest on Big Daddy Kane’s 1988 debut album “Long Live the Kane” and served as an associate executive producer on the 1994 debut album “Ready to Die” by Notorious B. I.G.

Career

In the early ‘90s, he became a popular radio DJ, playing the music of up-and-coming artists. He hosted his own radio shows, “Throwback at Noon” and “Friday Night Live,” which aired on New York City’s Hot97 and New York’s WBLS radio stations. It was during this time that Mr. Cee met the rapper, who went by the stage name of “Biggie Smalls.” Mr. Cee would help record the rapper’s demo and help broker the deal that would land Notorious “Biggie” Smalls a record deal with Bad Boy Records signed by Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Mister Cee joined The Flip Squad in 1998, alongside Mark Ronson, and went on to become a major influence on many artists, including singer-songwriter Alicia Keys, who referenced him in the death of autotune by Jay-Z. In 2014, Mr. Cee was among the first DJ’s to play the rapper’s “Trap Queen”, helping to jump-start his career. In addition to his music, he also contributed to the development of a new flavor of soft drinks called “Island punch finisher” for Tropical Fantasy. Grand Theft Auto IV (2008) featured a realistic version of Mr. Cee on the rap radio station, “102.7”.
