The 76ers are fighting for a spot in the NBA Playoffs, but they may have suffered a major blow. Joel Embiid went to the locker room just before halftime of Philadelphia’s penultimate regular season game against the Magic after landing awkwardly on his left knee following a made basket. Embiid had just returned to the 76ers’ lineup after a 29-game absence following surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his same knee. He finished with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists in 17 minutes.
Embiid drove for a layup with less than two minutes left in the first half, then jumped for an offensive rebound. After landing on his left knee a second time, Embiid writhed in pain and labored to get back on defense before leaving the game. He returned to the locker room for the second half.
It’s important to note that Embiid’s left knee has been giving him trouble all season long.Just before Embiid ruptured his meniscus, the left knee swelled and became inflamed. 76ers coach Nick Nurse told reporters after the game that the medical staff checked on Embiid at halftime and that there was no swelling and no injury.

Joel Hans Embiid was born on March 16, 1994, is a Cameroon national basketball player for the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers. He is also a dual French-American citizen. His parents are Thomas and Christine. He has a younger sister Muriel and a younger brother Arthur, who died in a car accident at 13. Arthur was a religious boy who distributed crosses to his classmates and gifts of toys to the needy. Joel has never seen his brother since he moved to the United States.
Embiid played mostly volleyball and soccer in his youth. Reports say Luc Mbah a Moute noticed Embiid at a Cameroon camp in 2011 and encouraged him to come to the United States for high school basketball.

On April 9, 2014, Embiid announced his intention to declare for the 2014 NBA Draft, opting out of his final three college seasons. On June 20, 2014, he had surgery on a broken right foot, ruling him out for 4 to 6 months.
Six days later, the Philadelphia 76ers selected him with the third pick in the draft, making him the third Cameroon national to play in the NBA, joining Ruben Boubete-Bouchette and Luc Mbah and a Moute. He was also the highest selected Cameroonian player.
On February 1, 2024 it was announced that Embiid would be out indefinitely with a left knee lateral meniscus tear after a game against the Golden State Warriors in which he was injured when Jonathan Kuminga fell on his knee trying to defend a ball in a play a few days earlier.
Embiid had missed 12 games before this injury, making it even more unlikely that he would have a second consecutive MVP campaign.
