Matthew McLain attended Arnold O. Beckman High School in Irvine, California. As a senior, he batted .369 with three home runs. Although he was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round of the 2018 MLB Draft, he chose not to sign.

Instead, McLain decided to play college baseball at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
