Matthew McLain attended Arnold O. Beckman High School in Irvine, California. As a senior, he batted .369 with three home runs. Although he was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round of the 2018 MLB Draft, he chose not to sign.

Instead, McLain decided to play college baseball at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). During the summer of 2018, he played for the Bellingham Bells in the West Coast League, where he earned the Top Prospect Award. At UCLA, he had a promising start, showing his talent in both his freshman year and subsequent seasons.

McLain was selected by the Cincinnati Reds with the 17th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft and signed with them in July.
