Sean and Steven were assisted in boarding by the boater who had stopped following the collision. Sean was flown by emergency personnel to a hospital in Miami from the Key Haven Boat Ramp, where he was driven by him.

Sean was cut on his head, neck, right arm, and shoulder, among other major injuries. He was breathing, but not very responsive. Regarding whether the dinghy Sean and Steven were riding in had a dive flag, there was substantial dispute as various witnesses gave differing accounts. Later, other witnesses saw the dinghy carried back to their main boat, the Grady White.
