In March 2015, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which had spread to her lymph nodes. She underwent treatment to shrink the tumor and had surgery to remove her breast in May 2016 because multiple tumors made a smaller surgery impossible. After surgery, it was discovered that cancer cells might have spread further than expected. Due to the advanced stage, Doherty had chemotherapy and radiotherapy after the surgery. She shared on April 29, 2017, that her cancer was in remission, meaning it was no longer active.

In February 2020, Doherty said her cancer had come back and now it's at stage four. By June 2023, she told everyone that the cancer had reached her brain and it's incurable. Then, in November 2023, she said it had spread to her bones. In January 2024, Doherty talked about a new treatment breaking through the blood-brain barrier and she called it a "miracle".
