Shilese Jones Car Accident
Shilese Jones had a bad car accident in January 2021 that stopped her from making the Olympic team. Her car hit another car in a traffic circle, and she got hurt badly. She broke her back and foot, which meant she needed three to four months to heal. Even though it was tough, Shilese didn’t give up. During her recovery, she worked very hard to get back into shape. She competed in the Nationals and finished 12th. She also went to the Olympic Trials in July and finished 10th, but she didn’t make the Olympic team.
In December 2021, something even sadder happened—Shilese’s dad, Sylvester Jones, passed away after fighting kidney disease for a long time. This was very hard for her, but she stayed strong. In 2022, Shilese started winning again. At the Nationals in August, she got two gold medals and a bronze medal.
When another gymnast got hurt, Shilese got a chance to be on the World Championships team. At the World Championships in Liverpool, she won a gold medal in the team event and two silver medals. In 2023, she did even better, winning more medals and getting closer to her dream of competing in the 2024 Olympics.

What Happened to Shilese Jones?
Shilese Jones had a tough time recently. In June, during the Olympic trials, she hurt her knee badly. She tore the ACL and meniscus in her right knee while practicing her vault. This injury stopped her from making the Olympic team for Paris 2024. Shilese was almost sure to join the team, just like Simone Biles, because she had won medals at the last two world championships.
She already had a shoulder injury that kept her from competing in the national championships earlier in June, but her coach, Sarah Korngold, said she was ready to try at the trials. During her vault warmup, Shilese landed and fell, holding her right leg. She sat on the podium for a while before her coach and a medical staff member helped her backstage.
Despite her injury, she came back to compete on the uneven bars and got the highest score of the night, 14.675. Shilese wrote on Instagram that her journey has been hard, but this injury won’t stop her. She’s now aiming for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. Even though she was really close to making the 2024 team, Shilese is determined to keep chasing her dreams.
