Who is Sven Göran Eriksson?

Sven-Göran Eriksson (born 5 February 1948) is a retired Swedish football manager and former player. After a modest career as a right-back, Eriksson became very successful as a club manager from 1977 to 2001, winning 18 trophies with teams in Sweden, Portugal, and Italy. He won the UEFA Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup (the last edition before it was discontinued) and reached the final of the European Cup.

Sven Göran Eriksson about David Beckham's Visit

During an interview with Radio Sweden’s P4 Varmland channel, 76-year-old Eriksson talked about a visit from David Beckham.

“He brought six liters of wine from years that are important to me,” Eriksson said, as quoted by ITV.

“He had wine from 1948 – the year I was born. That was very nice of him. He is genuine. He could have been a big diva, but he is the opposite.”

Eriksson added: “He ate herring, potatoes, and elk meat.

“The day before, he sent a chef to prepare the food, and then he came and spent the day with me. We chatted a lot about football.

“It shows how great he is. He didn’t have to come here. I felt proud that he came.”

Beckham’s gesture shows he holds Eriksson in high regard. Eriksson managed the England team for five years before leaving after the 2006 World Cup.

Sven-Göran Eriksson was born on 5 February 1948 in Sunne and grew up in Torsby, both in Värmland, Sweden. He is 76 years old. His father, also named Sven (born 1929), was a bus conductor, and his mother, Ulla (1926–2011), worked in a textile store. He got the nickname "Svennis" from his younger brother Lars-Erik, who had trouble pronouncing his name. Eriksson is often referred to by this nickname in Sweden.

In the rematch against Germany on September 1, 2001, England won 5-1 with Michael Owen scoring a hat-trick, Steven Gerrard scoring one goal, and Emile Heskey scoring the last goal.

England 2 Greece 2 – October 6, 2001: Despite the win in Germany, England needed a positive result against Greece to secure automatic qualification for the World Cup. They were trailing 2-1 in stoppage time at Old Trafford when David Beckham scored a 25-yard free-kick to tie the game. With Germany held 0-0 by Finland, England topped the group on goal difference.

England 1 Brazil 2 – June 21, 2002: In the 2002 World Cup, England reached the quarter-finals after a 3-0 win over Denmark. They played Brazil and took the lead through Michael Owen, but Brazil equalized and won 2-1 after Ronaldinho scored a long-range free-kick.

After a slow start, the team won seven of their first eight league games in 2011, including a 2-1 win over Bristol City with a last-minute goal from Martyn Waghorn. However, Leicester finished the season in 10th place.

Morecambe 2 Notts County 1 – July 22, 2009: After managing Mexico, Eriksson became director of football at Notts County, a League Two club. Despite high-profile signings like Sol Campbell and Kasper Schmeichel, the team struggled. Campbell left after playing just one game, a 2-1 loss to Morecambe.
