Craig Shakespeare had a successful playing career as an attacking midfielder, primarily on the left side of midfield. He began his journey at Walsall, signing as an apprentice in 1979 and turning professional in 1981.
He scored 59 goals in over 350 appearances for Walsall and helped the team gain promotion to Division Two in 1988, which he considered his greatest achievement. In 1989, he transferred to Sheffield Wednesday for £300,000 but spent less than a year there.
He then joined West Bromwich Albion for £275,000, where he made 128 appearances and became the team's first-choice penalty taker. After helping Albion achieve promotion in 1993, Shakespeare moved to Grimsby Town to reunite with his former manager, Alan Buckley. He later played for Scunthorpe United and spent time at three non-league clubs before retiring from professional football.
