Who is Connor Stalions?
Connor Stalions grew up in a family that loved Michigan football and played the sport in high school. In a documentary, you can see him as a 7-year-old dressed up as a Michigan coach for Halloween, talking about his dream to one day be a coach at the university.
He went to the U.S. Naval Academy and joined the Marine Corps because he admired military veterans who were also legendary sports coaches. He started his coaching career at Navy, where he became skilled at figuring out the other team's signals during games. This talent helped him land his dream job as a football analyst at Michigan. In 2022, he received a game ball from Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh after a win over Iowa in the Big Ten.
Where is Connor Stalions Now?
Season 4 of Netflix's UNTOLD series features Stalions, alongside stories about Steve McNair's murder and Hope Solo's legal issues with the United States Soccer Federation. While Stalions's story isn't as dramatic as the others, it sheds light on important problems in college football.
As of August 2024, Stalions is no longer involved in college football and is now working with a high school team. According to the Detroit Free Press, he is the defensive coordinator at Detroit Mumford High School. Head coach William McMichael confirmed this, but it's unclear if Stalions is being paid for the job.
Connor Stalions Controversy
In October 2023, Stalions went from being a relatively unknown staff member at Michigan to a major figure in college football news due to allegations of sign-stealing. He is accused of running a scheme where people were given tickets to watch and record the hand signals of teams Michigan would play against. This practice is against NCAA rules.
The accusation is that Stalions used the stolen signals to predict opponents' plays during games. Stalions denies these claims, saying he got the signals from watching games on TV and talking to coaches from other teams. He claims he made money by buying and selling tickets but never instructed anyone to film games for Michigan.
Despite the accusations, a documentary portrays Stalions in a more sympathetic light, featuring interviews with his parents, a military friend, and various supporters. Stalions himself describes the impact of losing his job and connection to Michigan, which had been a significant part of his life.
The situation led to Stalions' phone, laptop, and computer being seized, and he was initially suspended with pay by the university while an investigation took place. He later resigned, expressing the emotional toll of having his association with Michigan abruptly ended.
