Where is Julie Sweeney Now?
Julie Sweeney is Brian Sweeney's wife. Since 9/11, Julie got married again and had two kids. She now works as a substitute teacher and volunteers at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, where she talks with visitors from different countries.
After the 9/11 tragic event, Americans have promised to "never forget" and honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the attacks that deeply impacted the nation. Many people use social media to share images and messages to remember the victims, and some choose to share the final words of one victim, Brian Sweeney, as a way to pay tribute.
Who is Brian Sweeney?
Brian Sweeney was a pilot and instructor for the U.S. Navy. Later, he worked for a defense company, which let him do most of his work from home, according to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. He and Julie got married on Cape Cod, and they eventually decided to live there full-time.
Brian Sweeney's Last Message to His Wife
Sweeney called his wife, Julie Sweeney Roth, from United Flight 175, which crashed into the World Trade Center, and left her a voicemail before the plane hit.
He said, "Jules, this is Brian. Listen, I'm on an airplane that's been hijacked. If things don't go well, and it's not looking good, I just want you to know I absolutely love you. I want you to do good, go have good times. Same to my parents and everybody, and I just totally love you, and I'll see you when you get there."
Brian and Julie Sweeney's Love Story
Brian and Julie got married on Cape Cod and later decided to live there permanently. Julie, who is a teacher, shared that when she first saw Brian, she told a friend, "that's the kind of guy I would marry." They met at a bar in Philadelphia, where Brian stood out from the other men in suits. He was wearing a cap and denim shirt, and at 6'3", he made an impression.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Julie was teaching when she was called out of her classroom to take a phone call from her mother-in-law, Louise. Louise told her that Brian was on a plane that had been hijacked. The hijackers crashed the plane into the South Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
When Julie got home, she found a message from Brian on their answering machine. In a video interview for the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, Julie said she was grateful for that message. Hearing Brian’s calm voice gave her comfort. He had called from the plane before it crashed, and the museum has preserved his message as part of their collection.
