Haney defended his title against Alfredo Santiago in November 2019, and in 2020, he defeated Yuriorkis Gamboa and Jorge Linares. Haney, a 25-year-old boxer, achieved the undisputed lightweight title in 2021 by defeating Joseph Diaz.

He then defeated George Kambosos Jr. in June 2022 and Vasiliy Lomachenko in March 2023. Haney challenged Regis Prograis for the WBC super lightweight title, becoming a two-weight world champion at 25.
