McCary became a segment director for the thirty-ninth season of SNL in 2013. In 2017, McCary directed the comedy-drama film "Brigsby Bear," produced by The Lonely Island. On January 23, 2017, it made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Sony Pictures Classics released it on July 28, 2017.
