GM Gukesh Dommaraju won the 2024 FIDE Candidates Tournament. This is a big deal because he is now the youngest person ever to win this important competition. Career

Gukesh was very successful in chess when he was young. In 2015, he won the Under-9 category of the Asian School Chess Championships. Then, in 2018, he won the World Youth Chess Championships in the Under 12 category. This same year, he also won five gold medals at the Asian Youth Chess Championships. He won these medals in different chess formats like rapid, blitz, and classical chess.

On January 15, 2019, when Gukesh was 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days old, he became the second-youngest grandmaster in history. He almost broke Sergey Karjakin's record, but missed it by just 17 days. However, Gukesh's record was later surpassed by Abhimanyu Mishra, so he became the third youngest grandmaster instead.

Current World Champion Chess

The World Chess Champion is Ding Liren. He is from China. Ding Liren became the world champion in 2023 when he won a match against Ian Nepomniachtchi. The match happened in Astana, Kazakhstan. It was a very close and exciting fight. Ding Liren's win in that match made him the 17th world chess champion. He took over the title from Magnus Carlsen, who had been the champion since 2013.
