Why is Ben Stokes Not Playing At The T20 World Cup?
Ben Stokes won’t be part of England’s T20 World Cup squad as they look to defend their title in the tournament, which will be hosted by the West Indies and the United States in June 2022. The England Test captain underwent a knee operation in November 2023, which was followed by an intensive rehabilitation programme. Since then, Stokes has mainly played as a batsman.
England will play Test series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka in the summer and Stokes is hoping to return to full bowling form by then.
Ben Stokes is not playing the T20 World Cup
Stokes has opted not to take part in T20 World Cup and will instead focus on improving his bowling fitness. Commenting on his decision Stokes said, "I’m working hard and focusing on building my bowling fitness back up to fulfill a full role as an all-rounder in all formats of cricket," Stokes said in an ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) press statement.
"Opting out of the IPL and the World Cup will hopefully be a sacrifice that allows me to be the all-rounder I want to be for the foreseeable future."
"The recent Test tour of India highlighted how far behind I was from a bowling point of view after my knee surgery and nine months without bowling. I’m looking forward to playing for Durham in the County Championship before the start of our Test summer," he added.
“I wish Jos, Motty and all the team the best of luck in defending our title.”
