Lara Spencer Career

Lara Spencer grew up in Garden City, Long Island, and graduated from Garden City High School in 1987. She attended Pennsylvania State University on a diving scholarship, earning a degree in broadcast journalism in 1991. After college, she worked as a multimedia journalist at WDEF-TV in Tennessee and later at News 12 Long Island. She joined WABC-TV, where she gained national attention for her coverage of the TWA Flight 800 crash.

In 1999, Spencer became a national correspondent for ABC's Good Morning America. She married David Haffenreffer in 2000, but they divorced in 2015. Spencer married Richard McVey in 2018.
