Nastia Liukin came into the world on October 30, 1989, in Moscow, Russia, to her parents, Valeri Liukin and Anna Kotchneva. Both Valeri and Anna were once champions in gymnastics for the Soviet Union. Valeri Liukin, in particular, was an Olympic gold medal winner and also served as Nastia's mentor and father. He earned four Olympic gold medals for the Soviet Union at the 1988 Olympics and an additional two at the 1991 World Championships. Anna Kotchneva, on the other hand, was the 1987 World Clubs Champion in rhythmic gymnastics. The family relocated to the United States when Nastia was just two and a half years old, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. They initially made their home in New Orleans before settling in Texas.

Liukin reached her greatest heights at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where she clinched the title of Olympic all-around champion with the gold in the individual all-around event. Her exceptional displays also brought her four more medals at the Olympics, solidifying her position as the Olympics' most decorated gymnast of that year. Beyond her Olympic victories, Liukin's skill and performance were also recognized internationally, winning two World Championship titles on the balance beam in 2005 and 2007, and the uneven bars in 2005.
